Less than a year after Maguire’s £80 million transfer to Old Trafford, he was chosen as the Red Devils’ captain.

Although some fans still believe the 29-year-old is unfit to represent his club or country by donning the jersey, the 29-year-old continues to rile up opinions.

Since Erik ten Hag has preferred the defensive duo of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez this season, he has slipped down the pecking order.

Yet for England, the defender has made a name for himself as one of Gareth Southgate’s team’s pillars, contributing significantly to the Three Lions’ successful tournament runs in recent years.

On Thursday, England defeated Italy 2-1 in Naples, but Maguire was criticized for carelessly ceding the ball in the lead-up to the Azzurri’s goal.

After the game, when asked if he felt “properly appreciated” playing for Manchester United, Maguire responded saying:

“For England, yes, I do. Obviously, last season was difficult for the club, but, listen, I’ve proven myself to Gareth, who works with a wide range of center-backs.”

“He has the choice of all the English center-backs in the country and I play, every time I’m available, I’ve been in the team.”

“I’m sure if you ask the rest of the lads they know what I bring to the team. I’m 30 years old but I shouldn’t really need to prove myself at this level. I’ve over 50 caps. I’m England’s top-scoring defender.”

“I’ve played nearly 200 times for Manchester United, I’ve captained the club for three years now, but I do also understand that when you’re the captain of Manchester United you do come under the most amount of scrutiny.”

“Last season at club level, my performance wasn’t good enough, alongside everybody else at club level, not just myself struggled. Everyone else struggled.”

Maguire At Manchester United This Season

Maguire has only made a total of 10 league appearances so far, and just two of those have come following the conclusion of the World Cup in Qatar.

Without their captain, Harry Maguire, Manchester United has had a mostly good season.

The Red Devils defeated Fulham 3-1 to go to the FA Cup semifinals while defeating Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup.

With 12 games remaining in the Premier League, the team is also in a strong position to make the Champions League.

United are third in the Premier League standings just behind Manchester City and the in-form North London giants Arsenal.

In order to prove to Red Devils fans what they are missing out on, Maguire hopes to start England’s upcoming match against Ukraine on Sunday 23rd March 2023.

Harry Maguire

English center-back Jacob Harry Maguire, who was born on March 5, 1993, plays for both the England national team and Premier League side Manchester United.

He is regarded as a courageous and commanding defender.

Before making the transition to the first team in 2011, Maguire was a product of Sheffield United’s youth program.

He played 166 times in the club’s league and was named Player of the Year three times in a row. He also made the PFA Team of the Year for League One several times.

He was signed by Hull City for £2.5 million in 2014, then in 2015, Hull City loaned him to Wigan Athletic.

He joined Leicester City in 2017 for an initial sum of £12 million, and he played every minute of the 2017-18 season, winning player of the season as well as players’ player of the season at the club’s end-of-season awards.

Eventually, for an estimated £80 million, a record transfer cost for a defender, he moved to Manchester United, where he was named the team captain after only six months.
