Julian Nagelsmann, now former Bayern Munich coach, didn’t learn of his shocking dismissal until last night while on vacation skiing in Austria.
Bayern Munich, who have taken home the last ten Bundesliga Title straight, are ranked second in the League table, one point behind Borussia Dortmund.
News of Nagelsmann’s dismissal will have come as a great shock to fans and the manager himself, especially with Bayern still in the running for the title and Bayern having easily defeated PSG 3-0 on aggregate to go to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
The 35-year-old was notified of his dismissal on Thursday night while out skiing in the Austrian Zillertal, according to German publication Bild.
Nagelsmann joined Bayern in July 2021 and throughout the course of his 84 games as manager, winning 60 of them (71.4%). He also won one Bundesliga Title and two German Super Cups.
Bayern believed a management change would better safeguard their prospects of winning the treble.
They were eager for a fresh start ahead of critical matches against Dortmund, Freiburg, and Manchester City.
Midway through the international break, when teams frequently appoint new managers, Tuchel is set to take over the Bundesliga team.
Nagelsmann has become a frontrunner to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham after his painful departure from Munich, should Daniel Levy decide to fire Conte before his contract expires this summer.
Former Tottenham player Jamie O’Hara tweeted on Thursday that his former team should “get straight on the phone” in order to hire the unemployed manager.
After their defeat in the title race, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic also referred to them as “lazy, like I’ve never experienced.”
Julian Nagelsmann
Julian Nagelsmann, a German professional football manager and former player, was most recently the head coach of Bundesliga team Bayern Munich (born 23 July 1987).
Before joining Powerhouse Bayern Munich, Nagelsmann has previously led RB Leipzig and 1899 Hoffenheim.
Nagelsmann is regarded as one of the greatest young managers in international football and is well known for his diversity with formations, ability to keep possession, and use of the gegenpress.
Nagelsmann was born in the Bavarian town of Landsberg am Lech. He was the U17 squad captain for Munich and had youth playing experience with FC Augsburg and 1860 Munich.
He was a member of the second team in the 2006–07 campaign, although he did not play because of injuries.
Nagelsmann rejoined Augsburg for the 2007–08 season under Thomas Tuchel’s tutelage, but suffered a second meniscus and knee injury that damaged the cartilage.
He made the decision to retire from football at the age of 20 as a result. In the first part of 2008, he had already worked as a scout for his head coach Thomas Tuchel.
He spent four semesters in business administration at the university before switching to sports science.
He then focused on coaching, going back to his old team 1860 Munich where, from 2008 to 2010, he served as Alexander Schmidt’s assistant for Munich’s U17 squad.
Bayern Munich replaced Hansi Flick as head coach on April 27, 2021, and began a five-year contract with Nagelsmann on July 1, 2021, paying a then-record managerial transfer fee of €25,000,000.
In the Bundesliga, Nagelsmann’s debut game ended in a 1-1 draw with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
What do you think about Nagelsmann’s dismissal? Was it okay for Bayern Munich to have sacked him without prior notice?
