The Brazil international picked up an excruciating ankle injury in PSG’s dramatic comeback over Lille in French Ligue 1.

The Ligue 1 giants nearly settled for a home defeat against Lille at Parc Des Princes, trailing 2-3 late into the game before Kylian Mbappe’s late brace and Lionel Messi’s stoppage-time freekick turned the game on its head.

While two of the deadly and costly front three shone for PSG in the game, it was a sad one for Neymar. The Brazil international left the pitch on a stretcher after an excruciating ankle injury.

A previous report on Neymar’s injury situation hinted at the likelihood of the 31-year-old returning to PSG’s lineup against Bayern Munich in the Champions League second leg at Allianz Arena but will miss the next two Ligue 1 fixtures.

PSG boss Christophe Galtier was particularly optimistic about Neymar’s imminent return after the injury.

In a big blow to PSG and the club, a medical examination of Neymar’s injury and consultation with the medics confirmed Neymar needs a comprehensive ankle surgery and will be missed for the remainder of the 2022/23 football season.

A statement by the club released in the wake of the injury reveals Neymar will undergo a ligament repair in ASPETAR Hospital in Doha and will be out for three to four months, iterally ruling out action for the rest of the season.

On Friday, The Sun confirmed Neymar has undergone a successful surgical operation on his ankle at the ASPETAR Hospital in Doha, who are PSG’s official partner.

In a footage making the rounds on the media, a smiling Neymar on the hospital bed gave a thumbs-up to the camera.

He was surrounded by the medical staff who oversaw the successful surgical operation.

Before he traveled to Doha for the surgery, Neymar was expected to return to the squad before the end of the season.

However, PSG did not want to take any risk given the player’s right ankle injury history. Instead, the surgical operation was preferred as a safe option despite the disadvantage of missing the forward for the rest of the season.

Christophe Galtier had to reconfigure his formation from his usual three-man attack featuring the three deadly forwards – Messi, Mbappe, and Neymar after the injury blow.

He played a 3-5-2 formation featuring only Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe on the attack against Bayern.

The tactical switch changed nothing for the Parisians as they suffered another defeat at Allianz Arena against the Bavarians and were bundled out of the Champions League.

Neymar Injury

Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017 and has scored 118 times in his 178 appearances for the club. Before his injury this season, he played 18 matches for PSG, scoring 13 goals and delivering 11 assists.

He will be sidelined for three to four months following the surgical operation and will return to action for PSG next season.
