Robert Lewandowski was reportedly embroiled in a post-match brawl with teammate Ansu Fati following the club’s exit from the Europa League.
With a 2-1 loss against Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Spanish Giants were eliminated from the competition, with the Red Devils defeating Xavi’s team 4-3 on aggregate.
Lewandowski did score from the penalty spot, but later in the game, when Fati blocked a pass destined for the Barcelona number nine, he became obviously agitated.
The 34-year-old reportedly addressed Fati and vented his emotions to his teammate once the group returned to the locker room, according to AS.
According to the article, the Polish forward was “good-mannered” when airing his grievances, but he also reminded the young Spaniard that it wasn’t the first time he had blocked a pass directed to him.
Fati, who entered the game with 15 minutes remaining, then excused himself by saying that he didn’t see Lewandowski during the move, which led him to try and receive the cross.
Since joining the Catalans from Bayern Munich in the summer, Lewandowski has scored 25 goals in 30 games, which has been a big success for the team.
With 16 games remaining before the season ends, his goals have helped Barca maintain a solid lead over Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga.
The first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal matchup between Xavi’s team and Real Madrid is on Thursday. Unfortunately, as a result of the United loss, their European season is over.
Lewandowski, who is always polite, did not display any symptoms of annoyance in a post-game message he sent on social media, reflecting on the events of the evening.
‘We fought until the last minute but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough tonight.’ Lewandowski said.
‘We are disappointed, but we still have trophies to win this season. Thank you for your support.’
It follows another setback for Barcelona and Fati, who is expected to miss time with a knee injury sustained during practice.
The 20-year-old Fati experienced a setback with a contusion in his left knee upon Barcelona’s return to Spain in anticipation of their upcoming LaLiga match against Almeria this weekend.
The club announced on Twitter that the problem will prevent him from participating in Sunday’s activities.
The length of the striker’s absence from Xavi’s team is unknown as they prioritize local issues. Without Pedri and Ousmane Dembele, they will also have to try to get through Almeria, a struggling side.
This season, Fati has appeared in 34 games for Barcelona and scored six goals. He started just eleven games for Xavi’s team in 2022–2023 as a result of his struggles to make the first team.
