PSG sporting director Luis Campos has stated that the club is in contract negotiations with Lionel Messi to see if the Argentine will extend his stay.
At the end of the current campaign, Messi is scheduled to become a free agent, and in recent months, a transfer away from the French team has been suggested.
While his old club Barcelona has always expressed interest in bringing him back to Spain, reports had indicated that he was about to sign with Inter Miami in America.
However, he has not made it plain that he wants to leave PSG, and it is likely that he will extend his contract in Paris.
Campos reiterated his wish to keep the World Cup-winning captain at the club in an interview with Telefoot via Barca Universal.
He stated: “At the moment, we are in discussions with Messi for his extension. I would like to keep him in this project, I can’t hide it.”
“We are talking at the moment to achieve this goal, and continue to have him with us.”
Due in large part to Campos, PSG has jumped out to an eight-point lead at the top of the Ligue 1 standings.
He replaced Leonardo Araujo when he came on board in the summer, and reports indicate that he had a significant influence on the locker room.
Since joining the team two years ago, Messi has scored 26 goals in 57 games, aiding them in winning Ligue 1 last season by 15 points.
Although it is thought that a new contract arrangement is still some distance off, the Argentina star is willing to stay with the team.
PSG defeated Toulouse 2-1 on Saturday with a goal from Messi.
A new agreement is expected to include a 2024 expiration date with a one-year extension clause.
Lionel Messi
Leo Messi, also known as Lionel Andrés Messi, is an Argentine professional football player who plays forward for Ligue 1 team Paris Saint-Germain and captains the Argentina national team. He was born on June 24, 1987.
Numerous people consider Messi to be one of the greatest players of all time. He has won a record seven Ballon d’Or awards, a record six European Golden Shoes, and was selected for the 2020 Ballon d’Or Dream Team.
He spent his entire professional career with Barcelona, retiring from the team in 2021 after winning a club-record 35 trophies there, including 10 La Liga championships, seven Copa del Rey championships, and four UEFA Champions Leagues.
Messi signed a contract with Paris Saint-Germain on August 10.
He agreed to a two-year contract that runs through June 2023 with a one-year option.
Messi selected the number 30 for his team, the same number he wore for Barcelona when he made his senior debut as a teenager.
On August 29, Messi made his professional debut for the team as a second half substitute in a 2-0 Ligue 1 victory away at Reims.
On September 15, in the team’s away tie against Club Brugge that ended in a score of 1-1, he got his first start and Champions League debut.
Messi made his home debut for PSG in a 2-1 victory over Lyon four days later.
Messi’s Contract With PSG
Messi agreed to a two-year deal with PSG in 2021 that had a third-year option.
According to the hefty contract, Messi makes about $43 million annually (€40.5 million, £35 million).
If he is still on the team at the end of the summer transfer window, Messi also receives a loyalty incentive worth €15 million gross annually.
He did not, however, receive a signing bonus when he joined PSG in the summer like the other newcomers did.
The recent revelation that the football legend had received part of his payment in cryptocurrencies brought additional attention to that transaction.
Messi received a significant amount of PSG fan tokens, a form of tradable cryptocurrency product that aids clubs in generating additional cash by enabling holders to vote on a number of usually unimportant issues surrounding their teams.
