Chelsea fans chanted for Thomas Tuchel and Roman Abramovich after their team was thrashed 4-0 by Manchester City.
As the Blues suffered their fifth defeat in their previous seven games, some of the 8,000 away supporters turned against the team’s ownership and manager Graham Potter.
‘We’ve got Tommy Tuchel’, the traveling supporters could be heard chanting from the Manchester City away stand. In the away end, the team’s former owner Abramovich’s name was also yelled aloud because of the club’s ‘pathetic’ performance.
As the West London team struggled to make headway against a strong City team, there were sarcastic cries of “we’ve had a shot” following a rare attempt on goal.
Some supporters have been reminded of his predecessor, who won both the Club World Cup and the Champions League during his tenure at Stamford Bridge.
With goals from Julian Alvarez, Phil Foden, and a brace from Riyad Mahrez on Sunday, Potter’s team was eliminated from the FA Cup.
Potter, who took over in September after Tuchel was fired, acknowledged that he understands the frustration of Chelsea’s supporters.
‘Clearly we are suffering and it’s not nice at all,’ Potter said. ‘We can’t do anything other than do our jobs better and work harder.
‘You can understand the fans’ frustration and we respect that. There are always other opinions and criticism because results haven’t been positive.’
‘We’re going through a bad moment and sometimes when you have them you need something to blame. We have to stick together and keep working.’
Potter’s team is now 10th in the Premier League after winning only two of their previous nine games in all competitions, with analyst Alan Shearer calling the players’ performance “terrible.”
Shearer criticized Chelsea harshly during the BBC’s broadcast of the game, calling their performance “not acceptable.” “I don’t care how many injuries you have in your team,” he continued, “you can still put in a shift and they haven’t.”
N’Golo Kante, Reece James, and Raheem Sterling are just a few of the important players the Blues are now missing.
Shearer went on to say: ‘That is nowhere near good enough, no energy. Where’s the movement? They’ve had nothing up front at all. Everything has been sideways or even backwards.’
The victory puts Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup, where they will play either Oxford or Arsenal on Monday, while Chelsea is eliminated and will play Fulham in the Premier League on Thursday.
Graham Potter Hits Back At Chelsea Fans
Despite their chants for Thomas Tuchel’s return during their most recent humiliation in the hands of Manchester City, the Englishman is confident he can win them over later.
He insisted that while he understood the fans’ annoyance at the team’s recent string of disappointing results, the upcoming game is currently more crucial for him.
Sunday’s 4-0 demolition of Chelsea in the hands of City at the Etihad Stadium was made possible by goals from Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez, and Phil Foden.
The name of Tuchel, who was unexpectedly fired by the Blues’ new owners in September 2022, was also chanted by the opposition supporters.
The manager and his team were unable to ignore the chanting, and the former Brighton manager addressed the issue in his post-game press conference, saying: “We can’t do anything but do our jobs better and work harder.”
‘We understand the supporters’ frustration. There are always other opinions, criticism and negativity, but that’s part of the challenge.”
“It’s always challenging in the Premier League and it’s always challenging here.”
“That’s clear. We have to focus on the next day, the next match.”
