Mason Mount had rejected Chelsea’s new contract said to worth over £200,000 a week before leaving for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The Premier League giant had reportedly put forward a multi-million pounds deal in front of the 23-year-old England international before he joined Gareth Southgate’s squad for the World Cup.
The Chelsea star, who was raised through Chelsea Academy, is said to have rejected the contract.
Due to the World Cup, the Blues have temporarily halted negotiations with the representatives of Mount.
After the World Cup, talks are expected to resume between the two parties, but according to reports, it is less likely that Mount will accept Chelsea’s proposed new deal.
The primary bone of contention between Mount and Chelsea is the wage cap. According to reports, Mason Mount is asking Chelsea for a deal similar to the new signing from Manchester City, Raheem Sterling.
The fellow England teammate is reportedly earning £300,000 weekly wage at Stamford Bridge after joining the club from Manchester City last summer.
Meanwhile, the Blues are pecking Mount’s new deal at over £200,000 weekly, and the England star is reportedly unwilling to accept the offer.
Chelsea were reportedly keen on quickly striking a new deal with Mason Mount, including his England teammate Reece James since September.
While Reece James immediately accepted his six-year £250,000-a-week contract, discussions with the representatives of Mount have been met with hurdles.
While the wage cap is a top factor dragging the contract renewal talks between Mason Mount and his club, another factor that has been suggested to have affected the negotiation process is the duration of his current contract.
Mason Mount has one year and six months left in his current Chelsea contract, and there are interest already on the youngster from some top clubs in Europe.
Italian giants Juventus and Premier League rivals Liverpool are some clubs indicating interest in signing the fast-rising youngster.
According to reports, Mount is among the lowest-earning players at Chelsea, with around £85,000 wage.
However, his low wage cap has been attributed to his refusal to sign a new contract with the Blues after he returned from a season-long loan spell with Derby County in 2019.
