Manchester City attacking midfielder will certainly stoke flames of debate after he picked checked on his best and preferred teammate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. De Bruyne picked Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi despite the former struggling at Manchester United under Erik Ten Hag.

Ronaldo has struggled to pick form since his return to Old Trafford. In what pundits regard as the lowest ebb in his career since his rise to stardom, Ronaldo is yet to score a goal after 7 Premier League matches, with just a goal in the Europa League, which he scored after 9 competitive games.

At the end of last summer, Ronaldo opted for an Old Trafford exit which failed to go through with no club ready to make an offer for him.

He has struggled for a first-team appearance under Erik Ten Hag, starting only 3 matches, one in the Premier League and two in the Europa League. He is yet to record a Premier League goal and may fall below his last season’s 24 goals for the Red Devils.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi, despite struggling last season with Paris Saint-Germain, has picked form and is gradually picking up the Barcelona goal and midfield tiger he was.

In 11 matches so far for PSG this season, Lionel Messi has helped the French Ligue 1 giants to the summit of the table.

De Bruyne

Despite the yawning gap in form between the two players, Kevin De Bruyne had insisted on picking Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi.

When asked to choose his ideal teammate between the two, De Bruyne maintained that he would go for the Portuguese over the Argentine.

“I would probably say Ronaldo because he’s more of a typical striker”, De Bruyne said.

“Messi is still more of a playmaker. I am a playmaker, you can give me a striker.”

De Bruyne is Manchester City’s top assist-giver with 6 assists and a goal. He has been at his best for the Citizens and has been likened to Pep Guardiola’s Messi at Manchester City.

His comparison of the two top footballers can not be disputed due to his playing position in relation to the two players.

While Ronaldo is a striker, Lionel Messi is a playmaker and a midfield magician, just like De Bruyne.

In the same team, Messi will be more of a competitor than a complement, unlike Ronaldo, who is a striker. De Bruyne is considering the role, not the form.
