Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2:0 in UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night, August 10, 2022, to win their first trophy of the 2022/2023 campaign thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and David Alaba.
The Champions League and Europa League champions from the previous season squared off to kick off the new UEFA season. Real Madrid faced the German team as the reigning champions of the UEFA Champions League while the German team went into the game as Europa League winners.
The game began at 22:00 local time, which is 21:00 CEST in Spain and Germany or 20:00 BST in the United Kingdom, at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland.
Real Madrid dominated the first half as much as expected in the presence of 31,000 spectators crammed into the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.
As the Champions League holders displayed their class, the Europa League champions found it difficult to advance into the Real Madrid half.
Despite Real Madrid’s overwhelming advantage, Eintracht got the first legitimate shot on goal. When Kamada slipped by the Los Blancos defense, Courtois skillfully blocked his low shot.
After a superb move down the right side, Valverde crossed low to Benzema, who then sent the ball to Vinicius. Unmarked, Vinicius watched Tuta clear his shot off the line.
Real Madrid was in full control of the game, but in the final third, nothing was working. Real only had one genuine opportunity presented to them.
Real Madrid was having trouble because Eintracht appeared to be very well organized and was causing them several problems at the back.
However, in the 37th minute, Real Madrid took the lead thanks to David Alaba. Benzema received a corner kick that was floated into the penalty area. He headed the ball to the near post, where Casemiro laid the ball to a freed Alaba.
He scored into an empty net without making a mistake.The ball was fizzed over the outside of the box by Kroos to Benzema just before the 41st minute mark, but the Frenchman missed wide from close range.
Unlike the striker, a fantastic opportunity was missed that would have given Madrid a second goal.
Real Madrid went into the second half of the game with a 1-0 lead, albeit it should have been 3-0 if Benzema and Vinicius had taken advantage of their opportunities.
Vini and Benzema worked together in the 65th minute to give Madrid a 2-0 advantage.
The Brazilian sprinted down the left and cut inside before finding Benzema, who was standing 18 yards away. Benzema’s first-time shot took Trapp off guard and sailed into the net.
As the game entered its last 15 minutes, Real Madrid upped the ante a bit in terms of style. All of Vinicius, Benzema, Rodrygo, and Valverde’s touches of the ball were excellent. The Europa League champions were forced to stay in their half.
A Casemiro tackle on the edge of his own box served as the catalyst for a Real Madrid counterattack. When Kroos finally received the ball, his low shot was well too wide.
Aurelien Tchouameni and Antonio Rudiger then enter the game with five minutes remaining to make their Real Madrid debuts.
In the end, Real Madrid had it all too easy. First-half goals from Alaba and Benzema gave each team a two-goal advantage. If there had been better finishing, there may have been more. Courtois was attentive when the Germans did approach the Madrid goal.
