Over the years, football players make sure to celebrate their goals when they score because goals are uncommon and they adopt different ways of doing that.

When they score a goal, most footballers choose to celebrate with the standard fist pump or happy leap, but some go above and beyond, even choreographing their dance movements.

You probably recognize Erling Haaland’s “Meditation” position, Cristiano Ronaldo’s “Siu!” pirouette, and Paul Pogba’s iconic “Dab” move.

So, in 2022, we’ll be holding a new holiday known as the “Griddy.”

You can find out everything you need to know about it on FUTBALLNEWS. Come along as we stroll down this lane.

What exactly is the Griddy Dance?

The griddy is a well-known dancing technique in which the performer taps their heels continuously while swaying their arms back and forth to make the letters “OK” appear in their eyes.

Athletes from several sports have adopted the dance routine known as “The Griddy” to celebrate victories.

Numerous NFL stars started making the move on the touchdown celebration in 2020, and it quickly spread to the sport as a whole by 2021. In 2022, several soccer stars followed suit.

The name is derived from Allen “Griddy” Davis’s stage moniker, who created the dance. Davis reaffirmed this during an interview.

Origins – Who made the Griddy dance?

A high school football player named Allen Davis was inspired by the Nae Nae to create his own dance. Davis choreographed the dance and posted videos of it on YouTube.

Ja’Marr Chase, a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, and Davis were buddies. When Chase arrived at LSU, he introduced fellow wide receiver Justin Jefferson to the gridiron.

Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals’ pal Davis’ dancing moves first appeared on the social media site Snapchat before Chase started using them to celebrate while he was a student at LSU.

NFL All-Stars Justin Jefferson, Will Fuller, Tytus Howard, and Keke Coutee among others started to imitate the dance.

Which footballers do ‘The Griddy’?

Christian Pulisic, a player for Chelsea and the USMNT, is one of the most well-known footballers to have “hit The Griddy,” having done so as a celebration during a Champions League game against Lille in February 2022.

In a 2-0 victory over Lille at Stamford Bridge, Pulisic scored the second goal for the Blues in the match and then attempted the well-known dance as he made his way to the corner flag in front of the crowd.

Although Pulisic is undoubtedly well-versed in NFL culture and The Griddy dance, Anthony Elanga, a teenage player for Manchester United, performed it in January, therefore he may not be permitted to claim credit for popularizing it in European football.

The youthful Red Devil, whose accomplishments have already inspired Manchester United supporters to chant a song about him, enthusiastically danced after scoring against Brentford in the Premier League and Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Not only current celebrities are joining in on the fun. With the assistance of former England star Alex Scott, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher performed the dance during CBS Sports’ broadcast of the Champions League.

Thierry Henry, a legendary player for Arsenal, appeared displeased with Carragher’s performance of “The Griddy” and shook his head in bewilderment.

How Popular is the Dance?

The dance was introduced to the NFL by Chase and Jefferson. The dance quickly gained a lot of acclaim among fans, athletes, and famous people. The dance gained popularity after appearing in Fortnite.

Right Foot Creep, a song by YoungBoy Never Broke Again, was released in 2020. The lyrics of the song have been timed to the dance, and it is primarily heard on TikTok griddy videos.

Griddy Toast Crunch was introduced in 2022 as a result of a partnership between Justin Jefferson and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal came in a limited edition with a unique illustration on the box. It was gone in one hour and thirty minutes for $50.

How to do The Griddy Dance

The Griddy dance features a wealth of instructions from Jefferson.

  1. Tap the heels
  2. Swing the arms back and forth
  3. ‘Throw your Bs’ (make glasses)
  4. Speed it up

The dance involves swinging your arms back and forth while tapping the ground with the backs of your heels. The next step is to “Throw your Bs,” which involves making a pair of glasses with your hands raised over your face. The next step is to speed everything up after you have it down.
