The majority of the Manchester United players will return from their summer vacations this week in time for the new Dutch manager’s first practices.

De Gea told the club’s media outlet MUTV following his initial training sessions with the new manager that the team was all “excited” for the upcoming season and that on August 7, supporters can look forward to watching Manchester United play a great style of football.

‘I think we are all very excited for the new season, for the new manager,’ he said. ‘He plays a very good [type of] football so for sure the fans will love it.’

Manchester United appears to have increased their activity in the transfer market as pre-season begins as they attempt to finalize deals for Frenkie de Jong and Lisandro Martinez.

Barcelona is willing to sell the Dutch central midfielder due to their poor financial situation. Manchester United has identified De Jong as their top summer target as they attempt to upgrade their midfield.

Both Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic left the team last month on free transfers, so new acquisitions are crucial in that department. Manchester United has gotten a jump on Arsenal in their pursuit of Martinez and the Argentinian central defender may head to Old Trafford this summer.

The 24-year-old who can also play left-back and center-back has told Ajax that he only sees himself competing in the Premier League next year. Arsenal had briefly appeared to be in the lead for his signature but the Erik Ten Hag factor seems to have turned the race back in Manchester United’s favor.

Two offers from Arsenal were turned down with the second of which was for £38 million plus add-ons but that offer has been matched by Manchester United. Martinez has informed the Ajax hierarchy that it would be best for everyone involved if the club reached an arrangement with either Mikel Arteta’s team or Ten Hag’s new team.

According to The Times report on Saturday afternoon, Cristiano Ronaldo plans to quit the team this summer. The 37-year-old forward, who returned to the team he left for Real Madrid in 2009 last summer, is said to desire to play out his career in the Champions League.

Manchester United had a dismal season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, missing out on the top four by a significant margin.
