It was a rollercoaster for the 36 teams in the elite club competition in Europe. As expected, there was a spring of surprising results across 18 centers of action.
Notably, Real Madrid began their quest to defend the title by edging out a resilient Stuttgart with a 3-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Goals from Kylian Mbappe, Antonio Rudiger, and Endrick saw the Los Blancos triumph over the Bundesliga contingents with a 3-1 victory.
2023-24 champions and runners-up in the last edition Manchester City were surprisingly held to a goalless draw at Etihad by Serie A champions Inter Milan.
Premier League and Merseyside outfit Liverpool waved side a domestic setback to continue on their all-conquering run against AC Milan at the San Siro. Goals from Ibrahim Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Dominik Szoboszlai cancelled out Christian Pulisic’s 3rd-minute strike.
Another Premier League contingent, Aston Villa, put Swiss giants Young Boys to the sword at the Wankdorf Stadium. Goals from Your Tielemans, Ramsey, and Amadou Onana saw the Aston-based outfit steamroller to a thumping 3-0 victory.
Barcelona stumble to a first competitive defeat this season
Surprisingly, Barcelona could not replicate their prolific domestic run on the European stage. The Catalan giants opened their 2024-25 UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-1 loss to Monaco at St Louis III in France.
Bayern Munich were the biggest winners of the week. The Bavarians roared to a thumping opening victory over Dinamo Zagreb at the Allianz Arena.
England captain Harry Kane scored four times with three goals from the spot. Guerreiro, Michael Olise, Luis Sane, and Leon Goretzka also recorded their names on the score sheet as the Bundesliga giants sailed to a 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb. 2024-25 UEFA Champions League Table: All You Need to Know
Unlike the old format which was jettisoned after the 2023-24 campaign, the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League promises more games per team. All teams are expected a play eight matches, comprising of four home and away fixtures in the league phase.
The top eight teams after the first round of matches will automatically qualify for the knockout (round of 16) of the competition. Teams finishing 9th to 25th will be seeded in a two-legged playoff layoffs to determine whether to join the top eight teams for the next round of the competition. The 10 bottom-placed teams will be relegated from the competition.
