The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League matchday two fixtures have been concluded with all 18 matches rounded up.

As expected, fans were treated to intriguing games with a rain of goals, sensational individual performances, and many more.

Most importantly, the results have seen teams learn their fate and standings on the table, which will subsequently decide who qualifies for the next round of the competition or crash out.

As usual, an array of shocking results were recorded with defending champions Real Madrid suffering their first Champions League defeat in 258 days.

The Los Blancos last lost a Champions League to Manchester City in the 2022-23 semifinals where they were pummeled 4-0 at Etihad. Since then, they have maintained an undefeated streak, winning the competition last season.

The towering record was down to ruins at an unlikely destination against an unlikely opponents – Lille.

A 45+3rd-minute spot-kick goal by Canada international Jonathan David was all Lille needed to secure all three points against their star-studded opponents.

Camavinga had mistakenly handled the ball in his box from a set piece leading to the penalty. While the visitors dominated proceedings, it was a deserved victory for the home side who showed more hunger for a win.

Premier League contingents Aston Villa were also among the biggest winners in the round. The Unai Emery-led side recreated their cup-winning 1982 victory over Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich at the Villa Park.

While the Vincent Kompany-led side dominated proceedings, Aston Villa held their nerves to defend and pounce on the counter. The first half ended barren before super-sub Jhon Duran scored a stunning lobbed goal to condemn the visitors to their first defeat in a competitive match this season.

The win has seen Aston Villa make it two wins in two matches while Bayern Munich have been pegged to default following their 9-2 opening win over Dinamo Zagreb.

Another Premier League contingent Arsenal also proved their readiness for the competition. The 2023-24 runners-up edged out French champions PSG at the Emirates with a deserved 2-0 victory. Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka saw the Gunners secure an emphatic victory over the 2023-24 semifinalists.

Premier League champions Manchester City edged out Slovakian giants Slovan Bratislava with a 4-0 away victory. Goals from Erling Haaland, IIkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, and McAtee saw the Premier League giants ease to a deserved victory over the hosts.

Another Premier League contingent Liverpool continued on winning ways against second Serie A opponents Bologna. Mohamed Salah and Mac Allister struck as the Reds saw off Bologna with a 2-0 victory at Anfield.

Barcelona recovered from their opening defeat to Monaco. The Catalan giants roared to a thumping 5-0 victory over Young Boys in Spain.

2024-25 UEFA Champions League Table: All You Need to Know

Unlike the old format which was jettisoned after the 2023-24 campaign, the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League promises more games per team. All teams are expected a play eight matches, comprising of four home and away fixtures in the league phase.

The top eight teams after the first round of matches will automatically qualify for the knockout (round of 16) of the competition. Teams finishing 9th to 25th will be seeded in a two-legged playoff layoffs to determine whether to join the top eight teams for the next round of the competition. The 10 bottom-placed teams will be relegated from the competition.
