Leagues Cup Top scorers: The American League Cup continues to make headlines in the America Soccer.
Fans are enjoying every bit of the drama, intensity and passion of the players of their respective clubs. However, there are players with exceptional stats in the Leagues cup.
The contribution to their teams made it possible for them to reach the round of 16. These players are the top five highest goal scorers in the tournament.
1. Bongokuhle Hlongwane
The South African midfielder sits at the top of the chart of the Leagues Cup Top Scorers. He scored six goals in three appearances to push his team, Minnesota, to the round of 16.
In the previous match against Columbus, which happened on August 5, 2023, the South African midfielder scored two goals.
Hlongwane scored two goals against Puebla on July 24, 2023. In Minnesota’s 3-2 defeat to Chicago, the South African scored the only two goals for his club.
If he continues to keep up the momentum, he may end up as the highest goal scorer when the tournament ends.
2. Brandon Vazquez
The striker who plays for FC Cincinnati is the second-highest goal scorer in the League Cup. He scored five goals in three appearances.
Vazquez scored an 85th minute penalty to take Cincinnati into a penalty shootout, but it was not enough to secure them a spot in the Round of 16.
When Cincinnati defeated Guadalajara on July 28, 2023, Vazquez scored a hat trick. He was also a goal scorer when Cincinnati played a 3-3 draw against Sporting KC.
3. German Berterame
The 24-year-old striker scored five goals in three appearances for Monterrey. Berterame scored two goals when Monterrey defeated Real Salt Lake 3-0 on July 27, 2023.
He also scored three goals against the Seattle Sounders on July 31, 2023.
4. Lionel Messi
The Argentine joined Inter Miami from Paris Saint Germain. The midfielder, since arriving at the American club, has made an immediate impact, scoring five goals in three matches.
On his debut, he scored the winning goal against Cruz Azul. In Lionel Messi’s second match, the midfielder scored two goals against Atlanta United.
On August 3, 2023, Lionel Messi scored two goals against Orlando City. Since Messi joined the soccer club, they have won three matches in a row for the first time this season.
5. Daniel Gazdag
The Philadelphia Union star has four goals in three appearances.
The Hungarian midfielder had been impressive for the Philadelphia Union in past matches, his ball distribution and technical ability to command his area made it difficult to play against the club.
In the club’s last match against Queretaro, the midfielder scored a hat trick; out of the three goals scored against Queretaro, two were from the penalty spot.
The midfielder also scored in a penalty shootout against D.C. United.
