The UEFA Champions League is back with a bang and goals have started pouring him from the first-leg of the round of 16 which started on Tuesday, February 18.
The top scorers in the UEFA Champions League this season have started emerging with Borrusia Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland leading the pack with ten goals and an assist followed by Bayern Munich’s striker Robert Lewandowski with the same goals.
The following are the top goal scorers in the competition:
Erling Braut Haaland (Salzburg/Borussia Dortmund): 10 goals
New Borrusia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland made history last night when he scored a brace against Paris Saint-Germaine to catch up with Lewandowski on ten goals. The 19-year-old may have changed clubs but his goalscoring form in the Champions League continues. He is only the second player to score 10 Champions League goals as a teenager.
The Norweigian had an extraordinary debut group stage with RB Salzburg, scoring eight goals (including two penalties) and an assist. Then he made history by becoming the first player to score for two clubs in the same UEFA Champions League season with his double for Dortmund against PSG. He took his tally to 10 UCL goals as the knockout stages began.
Robert Lewandowski (Bayern München): 10 goals
The Polish international has also scored ten goals in the competition. Lewandowski scored on the first five matchdays, and his four against Crvena Zvezda came in a competition-record 16 minutes. The Bayern forward has now scored 63 Champions League goals. The striker is fifth in the competition’s all-time rankings and topped the group-stage table for the second year running.
Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur): 6 goals
The competition’s third-highest goalscorer is Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane with six goals. Spurs have been inconsistent in the Champions League this season but the England international has scored in his 450 minutes on the pitch. Kane scored two from the penalty spot and went on to score two from open play against Crvena Zvezda and bagged a brace in the comeback versus Olympiacos that clinched progress.
Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain): 5 goals
PSG forward Kylian Mbappé has been spectacular in the competition this season. The Frenchman has scored five goals in only 330 minutes and also produced three assists. He has also bagged a total of 19 UEFA Champions League goals. Mbappe is the first player to score 10 Champions League goals as a teenager.
Raheem Sterling (Manchester City): 5 goals
Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has bagged five goals and two assists this season. The England international also had a hand in seven goals in total. Sterling scored his first UEFA Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta on Matchday 3.
Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspur): 5 goals
The South Korean forward has registered five times in his last three UEFA Champions League outings, and has also produced an assist in his 340 minutes of game time.
Dries Mertens (Napoli): 5 goals
Belgian international Dries Mertens converted a penalty in the 4-0 win over Genk that took Napoli through to add to his four previous goals and one assist in the space of 442 minutes.
Memphis Depay (Lyon): 5 goals
The Netherland international’s late equaliser against Leipzig to send Lyon through was his fifth strike of the group stage, from 394 minutes of action.
Mauro Icardi (Paris Saint-Germain): 5 goals
Argentine International Mauro Icardi has also scored five goals in the competition. He made the mark in his 401 minutes.
Lautaro Martínez (Internazionale Milano): 5 goals
Inter Milan striker has scored five goals this season in the competition. He achieved the feat in 521 minutes. He has also been superb for Antonio Conte’s side in the Serie A.
